Fly Fishing the OBX
Old Goat Coastal Fly Fishing was created with the idea of introducing the freshwater fly fisherman to the world of Saltwater Fly Fishing. When most fisherman think of saltwater fishing the images of off shore charter boats and big game species come to mind. Through the years I have heard so many ”Troutbums” say to me “What can you catch on the Fly in the Salt? The simple answer is ANYTHING! My favorite approach to freshwater fly fishing is wade fishing. I’ve carried over this approach here on the coast. The sounds of the Outer Banks are the perfect environment for the stalking approach of fly fishing. Our sounds are relatively shallow and sight casting to Drum are the preferred style of fly fishing. Deeper troughs will produce the prized Speckled Trout. Flounder, sheepshead and bluefish are also always present with other saltwater species a possibility. Let an Old Goat help you make the transition from fresh to salt and open up a whole new world of fly fishing.

Contact me and let me introduce you to the world of Saltwater Fly Fishing. I started as a freshwater fly fisherman, fishing the classic trout streams of Pennsylvania and New York. I’ve worked for a Orvis endorsed fly shop in Pennsylvania and was co-owner of a saltwater fly shop here on the Outer Banks where I also taught fly tying, casting and guided saltwater fly trips. Let me help you make the transition to the Salt.
Join me as we wade and stalk the endless flats of the Outer Banks! We will target Redfish, Speckled Trout and Flounder typically in water that can be less than 2 feet deep. Our goal is sight casting to tailing drum. Some blind casting will be done as we stalk in water that can hold a variety of saltwater species.
We review the basics of fly casting the saltwater flats of the Outer Banks. Some areas we will review include casting in the wind, single and double haul, water loading and some misconceptions of fly casting in the salt. We will also discuss the differences between fresh and saltwater fly fishing techniques.
Join me as we review some basic techniques for tying the Saltwater Flies we use here on the flats of the Outer Banks. All materials are included and no experience is needed. Fly tying classes are conducted at local breweries, coffee shops or at my workshop.
